雅思口语Part 2 不用工作或学习的一天

Describe a time you enjoyed a free day off work or school

You should say:

Where you were
What you did
Who you were with
And how you felt about it

Last week, I took a day off to go skateboarding.

I went to Chongli, a mountainous town 150 km from Beijing, where many snowevents were held during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The town is known for its well-established ski resorts with advanced facilities. I have to admit I was deeply impressed the moment I got off the train as I sawthe white ski runs winding through the mountains. Under the cover of snow, everything appeared even more majestic and spectacular.

I was there to give skateboarding my first shot, a sport people around me can’t stop talking about. I thought it would be a wonderful chance for me to try it out and find out its charm. My best friend Ellie was also there. We have known each other for our whole life, and like me, she is also an adventurer kept exploring new things. So when I offered to have a little ski trip, she said yes without any hesitation.

I was completely aware that I was nowhere close to being athletic, so I didn’t expect I would enjoy the trip. But it turned out that I could not be more wrong. Skating down the hills was so thrilling that I could feel my adrenaline rising. All of a sudden, all the worries, all the daily hassles just disappeared, like they were switched off somehow. I have never experienced something like that throughout my whole life.

That’s the kind of experience that makes you appreciate that you stepped out of your comfort zone. Though risky, as long as you can overcome the fear in your heart, extreme sports are things you can seek happiness from and a nice escape from dull and uneventful life.

雅思口语Part 3

 1. Do people nowadays have more free time than in the past?

In general, I don’t think so.

And I believe there are several reasons for that.

To begin with, today's competition in the job market is becoming increasingly fierce. To stand out, people have to constantly improve their professional skills and work longer hours. This will cause a reduction in leisure time and prevent people from achieving work-life balance.

On top of that, due to the rapid development of technology, the boundary between personal life has become blurred. The emergence of video conferencing and instant messaging applications makes people more reachable by their bosses and colleagues at any time, even outside of work hours.

 2. Do you think most people are able to manage their free time well?

From my perspective, I think this question depends.

For those who have strong self-discipline and clear goals, managing time might not be so challenging. These people might have a routine in their free time. Even if not so, they are likely to have a detailed plan to stick to. For example, if someone wants to pass the exam with flying scores usually use their time effectively to ensure they have enough opportunities to focus on works that need to be done.

However, those who are not good at making plans or lack motivation may struggle to achieve time management. Without a specific plan, they might delay starting a project or lounging around all day long, which will prevent them from using their free time productively.

 3. What do people like to do when they are free in your country?

In China, people have a wide variety of activities they like to do in their free time.

As for young people, they tend to stay indoors. Many people relax by watching their favorite TV shows, series, or movies at home. Especially with the development of online streaming platforms, it has become even more convenient to access a wealth of video resources.

But middle-aged or elderly would rather spend time outdoors. Activities like hiking and fishing have always been their favorite pastime. This can not only help them stay fit and away from all kinds of chronic diseases they are prone to but also allow them to escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life for a while.

 4. What's the difference between the things people did in their free time in the past and the things they do nowadays?

The way people spend their free time has changed significantly over the years. In the past, choices of leisure activities were limited, and often centered around simple pastimes and local interactions. However, today’s society has experienced a profound transformation thanks to advancements in technology and transportation, broadening the spectrum of available activities. For instance, traveling has become much more feasible due to improved transportation infrastructure such as high-speed railways and the extensive use of private cars. This makes it easier for people to explore different regions or even travel internationally.

Additionally, technology plays a role in how we spend our leisure time. Nowadays, fewer individuals visit friends face-to-face; instead, social media platforms have facilitated virtual interactions, allowing people to stay connected regardless of distance.

 5. Why is working extra hours common nowadays?

The phenomenon of working extra hours is also prevalent in today’s work culture. Employees often feel compelled to put in additional time to stand out in a competitive job market, viewing extended hours as a way to showcase their commitment and productivity. For example, someone seeking a promotion might find themselves staying late to finish projects early or undertake more responsibilities.

From an employer's standpoint, the pressure to boost profits in a competitive landscape often leads to requesting employees to work overtime. This strategy allows companies to enhance output without the costs associated with hiring additional staff. In manufacturing industries, for example, extra hours during peak seasons are necessary to meet increased demand.

 6. What can we do to stop working long hours?

I think the most urgent thing is to cultivate a healthy work culture. Enterprises should promote a corporate culture that values the balance between work and life and guides employees to establish correct work concepts.

But I believe this can not simply count on the companies themselves. The government should play its role in formulating and refining relevant labor laws and regulations, clearly defining the standard working hours per week and the upper limit of overtime hours.

Meanwhile, employees have their due part. In order to boost working efficiency, they can participate in relevant training courses or online learning platforms to improve professional skills.
