雅思口语Part 1 Puzzles
👉1. Did you do puzzles in your childhood?
Yes, I did. When I was a kid, I was not so into dolls like other girls. Instead, I was more interested in doing puzzles. This was because my parents told me that solving puzzles was a good way to stimulate my intellectual development. You know, being smart was a lure for a kid. Therefore, I’d rather spread the book on my table and stay focused. Sometimes I could even finish one puzzle within 1 minute, which brought me a strong sense of achievement.
👉2. When do you do puzzles, during your trip or when you feel bored?
I should say now I just do puzzles when I feel bored. To some extent, it is a way to kill time. All I need is a quiet place. Then, I’m allowed to immerse myself in doing the puzzles. However, if I’m travelling, I will be disrupted frequently. For example, the network connection is not always stable on train. Thus, I have to stop solving puzzles from time to time and I may get lost. Consequently, I may feel annoyed and don’t want to have a try any more.
👉3. Do you like doing word puzzles or number puzzles?
To me, I like doing word puzzles. I guess it is related to my previous experience. I did word puzzles the first time my parents introduced puzzles to me. Plus, it used to be a good way for me to memorize some phrases both in Chinese and English. Therefore, nowadays, whenever I wanna do some puzzles, word puzzles will be my top priority. To be specific, I enjoy word puzzles more from force of habit.
👉4. Which is more difficult for you?
Frankly speaking, it is difficult for me to do number puzzles. You know, recognizing words is much easier than calculating the number because I'm not a person who is skillful in math. It is just beyond my capability. I mean sometimes because of the limitation of my calculation, I can be stuck on the puzzle for several hours. However, with sufficient lexical resources, I can always find a way out as for word puzzles.
👉5. Do you think it is good for old people to do puzzles?
I do believe it because it is definitely good for their mental health. As we all know, after the retirement, many senior citizens spend most of their time indoors, without any company. Therefore, doing puzzels will eliminate their boredom and loneliness even though they are alone. More importantly, solving puzzles can stimulate their brain, which may further slow down the depression and lower the risk of dementia.

I would like to talk about an impressive English lesson in which my teacher taught me a song instead of giving us dictation.
When I was in primary school ten years ago, one day my English teacher told us that we would learn an English song. It was a big surprise for us because normally we just read the article aloud and tried our best to remember those phrases.
During the class, she first introduced the song to us, which was called seasons in the sun, created by Western life, a well-known band from Ireland. Then she distributed the handouts to us. To be specific, the lyrics. After that, we started to listen to music. The melody was easy to follow. Therefore, we learned how to sing the song immediately.
However, we had no idea about the meaning of the song. You know, this was my favorite part of the class since I was totally motivated to recognize the words and have a comprehensive understanding of the lyrics.
In order to help us figure out the lyrics, she just told us the story of the song. It was really sad because it was a story about a person who got cancer and would die soon. When he was in face of his dad, he felt guilty. Equipped with the background information, I fully understood the meaning of the black sheep.
You see, my teacher just used the song as a teaching tool to inspire us and allow us to gain more native expressions. Plus, everyone enjoyed the class in that the atmosphere was relaxing and we didn't have to be nervous. It seemed that we just took a break from a long period of study. Nevertheless, we acquired knowledge in that process.

👉1. Why do people learn foreign languages?
From my perspective, there might be several different explanations. For me and many students who would like to study abroad, the reason we learn a foreign language is that it is necessary for our application. You know, if we are not qualified, we won't be admitted to the university.
Even though some of us are lucky enough to get the waiver, it is tough for us to follow the professor in lectures. However, for others, they may just wanna broaden their horizon and learn about the culture of foreign countries. I mean, language is part of the culture and it provides us with a great opportunity to appreciate the diversity of culture.
👉2. What makes a good foreign language teacher?
First of all, they should have a solid understanding of the language they teach. This, I believe, is the bottom line, for, without it, the quality of their teaching remains lower. So they should, for example, have a very good grasp of grammar. Second, it is important to make learning more engaging and interactive. I mean enlightening students and encouraging them to get involved in the class and express themselves is definitely something that a great language teacher should hold.
👉3.Do you think grammar is important when learning foreign languages
I do think so. I have to admit that grammar is too strict, especially in English. However, it serves as the core of any language. By learning grammar, a learner is able to quickly gain a basic understanding of the language. Accordingly, they can make correct sentences faster and write an article or express themselves in a logical way. Although grammar is not the most exciting element in the language-learning process, it plays a significant part in learning a foreign language.
👉4. Is it interesting to be a foreign language teacher? Why?
I guess it is interesting. First, it will bring you a sense of confidence and achievement because you will bring something completely different to your students. I mean, a foreign language means a new writing system, new pronunciation, new grammar, and even new culture. By teaching another language, you are guiding the students into another realm and this is a rewarding experience because you will also provide them with great opportunities to discover their interests and work on their academic goals in the future.
