这道题主要考同学们对trade-off词义的深层理解。
trade-off的意思是:
a balance achieved between two desirable but incompatible features; a compromise; a giving up of one thing in return for another
（在理想的，但不能兼顾的两者之间所取得的）一个平衡；为换取另一件事不得不放弃一件事
为了更好地理解这个单词，我们来看一下它的动词（词组）形式。
trade something off 放弃…以换取他物
to accept a disadvantage or bad feature in order to have something good
例句：
The government traded off economic advantages for political gains.
政府牺牲了经济利益来换取政治利益。
然后再来看这个单词的名词形式的例句，就更容易理解了。
例句：
For some car buyers, lack of space is an acceptable trade-off for a sporty design.
对一些购车者而言，设计成跑车风格的车型即使空间狭小也是可以接受的。
考生只有深刻理解trade-off这个词的意思，才能迅速发现第三空的备选项中的must be sacrificed其实就是trade-off这个词的定义里面所包含的内容，然后顺利选出第二空和第三空。
然后再看第一空，这里暗中考了allow和impossible这两个词暗含的相反含义（allow是“使得成为可能”，impossible是“不可能的”），是表示一种不同时间上的反差，表示过去的情况和现在的情况不同；或者过去的情况和更早一些的过去的情况不同。
这道题中需要同学们重点识记的几个单词是：
yield vi. 出产（天然产品，农产品，工业产品），产，出
produce or provide (a natural, agricultural, or industrial product)
例句：
The land yields grapes and tobacco.
这片土地出产葡萄和烟草。
yield还有“屈服”的意思，GRE也会考，我们在这里不展开。
curb vt. 抑制；控制；遏制
restrain or keep in check
例句：
She promised she would curb her temper.
她答应会控制住自己的脾气。
